Stretching! So Simple, Yet So Powerful!

Stretching is something that is brought up often, but many still do not understand how important those 5 minutes really are for your health.  So let’s dive into this a little more and hopefully convert more people to become daily stretchers:)

Benefits of stretching!

Here are the major benefits to adding stretching to your daily program.  This is not a time commitment at all so there is no reason why everyone should not be doing it more including myself!
-Increased flexibility and range of motion
-Injury prevention
-Preventing DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness)
-Improved posture
-Improved performance
-Stress relief
-Improved circulation
Now those are some wonderful benefits for just spending 10 minutes a day stretching!  Why don’t you want to do it again?  There is not a single person out there that would not benefit from more stretching in their life.

How many times should you stretch a day?

Well as many times as you can, to be honest! But, prime times to stretch are before you go to bed, when you first wake up, and after your workouts.  When you first get up it is a great way to wake your body up and get your blood circulating.  Then before you go to bed it is a great way to unwind from the day.
These times work well for those that need a schedule to help them be consistent.  Don’t just think these are the only times to stretch.  You should get up throughout your day especially if you sit a lot to at least do a few stretches.

How long do you hold stretches for?

This is another important factor to stretching.  If you do not hold the stretch long enough you won’t experience the benefits from the stretch.
So the rule is to hold each stretch for at least 20-30 seconds.  Again anything less then that will not work.  You can certainly go longer especially if you are tight.
Along with time you should hit each stretch at least twice.  The first time through is lighter, then the second time through is a deeper stretching to promote more flexibility.
