When it comes to working out the biggest thing I want people to realize is that exercise is not an option. It is not a luxury only the blessed can benefit from. It is your responsibility and duty to exercise to ensure the quality of your life. To think otherwise is irresponsible. In this post I want to explain the benefits of exercise on the body and the mind to show how important this is to your life. Once you realize the importance there is no way you can justify not making it a priority.
The Affects On The Mind
Increases Resilience To Stress:
Studies on mice have shown that exercise reorganizes the brain so that it is more resistant to stress.
It does this by stopping the neurons firing in the regions of the brain thought to be important in the stress response (the ventral hippocampus)
Exercise has a relatively long-lasting protective effect against anxiety.
Both low and medium intensity exercise has been shown to reduce anxiety. However, those doing high intensity exercise are likely to experience the greatest reduction in anxiety, especially among women.
Escape A Bad Mood
If you want to raise your energy levels, reduce tension and boost mood, you can talk to your friends or listen to some music.
But most agree that for the difficult job of transforming a bad mood into a good one, exercise is the most effective method.
The relationship between exercise and sleep is a little more complicated than most imagine. It’s not necessarily the case that exercise makes you tired, so you sleep better.
For example, one study on insomniacs found that 45 minutes on a treadmill did not make them sleep better that night (Baron et al., 2013).
However, the study found that exercise did help sleep in the long-term. Participants with insomnia who kept to their exercise programs over 16 weeks did get better sleep than those who did no exercise.
Migraine sufferers are often afraid of exercise because it might bring on an attack.
But a study has shown that exercise can actually help prevent migraines (Varkey et al., 2011).
Participants who took part in three sessions a week on an exercise bike for three months showed improvements equivalent to taking the latest anti-migraine drugs
Affects On The Body
Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn.
Regular trips to the gym are great, but don’t worry if you can’t find a large chunk of time to exercise every day. To reap the benefits of exercise, just get more active throughout your day — take the stairs instead of the elevator or rev up your household chores. Consistency is key.
Combats Health Conditions And Diseases
Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Regular exercise helps prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, a number of types of cancer, arthritis and falls.
Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance.
Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lung health improve, you have more energy to tackle daily chores.
Improves Joints And Bone Health
As exercise can place as much as five or six times more than your body weight on them. Peak bone mass is achieved in adulthood and then begins a slow decline, but exercise can help you to maintain healthy bone mass as you get older.
Weight-bearing exercise is actually one of the most effective remedies against osteoporosis, as your bones are very porous and soft, and as you get older your bones can easily become less dense and hence, more brittle — especially if you are inactive.
If you are not making your health a priority I hope after reading this it opens your eyes to making that shift. Stop giving into the excuses your tell yourself and take responsibility for the quality of your life. Take the first step and keep moving forward.
